Susanville is a city in and the county seat of Lassen County, California. It lies at the head of the Honey Lake Valley and is flanked by the cliffs of the Susan River Canyon. Susanville has a semiarid climate with wet, cold winters and very warm, mostly dry summers. It is also considered a gateway city to Reno on U.S. Highway 395. Eagle Lake is located 15 miles (24 km) North of the town. The Bizz Johnson Trail follows an old branch line of the Southern Pacific Railroad for approximately 26 miles between Susanville and Westwood. The trail is popular with hikers, railroad history buffs and cross country skiers. The Susanville Depot and Museum at the beginning of the trail houses historic photographs and railroad memorabilia in a restored 1920's train station. Of particular interest in downtown are the Susanville murals, eight on outdoor walls, one indoor and all within a five-block area.
